Excellent kit

The Servo Operated Pneumatic Valve Kit is a very useful kit indeed. Construction is quite simple and is explained well in the instructions. I have used it with both NXT and EV3 robots, and with NXT-G and the EV3 software – driving it with the 8 Channel Servo Controller for NXT or EV3 in both cases. You might find the following tips helpful:
- Do not connect the valve at first – run the NXTServo demo program (if that's what you are using) and tweak the position values to get them right. I found that 1150 and 1850 gave a full throw of the actuator lever (the demo program uses 1360 and 1600);
- Note that the servo is rated at 4.8 Volts. Although the instructions say that you can run it at 6 Volts for short periods (and that's easy to do accidentally if you are testing different servos), the servo can often jitter badly at the higher positions. I dropped the speed down to 40 and while that didn't make it go away, it seemed to reduce the frequency of it occurring and made it much less annoying when it did jitter. It's best just to stick to 4.8V.
- Avoid connecting your valve servo to a powered NXTServo board when it isn't connected to a powered-up robot – the servo can try to drive further than the valve actuator can go. If you connect to a powered-up robot first then the servo will drive to the neutral position instead.
