Magnetic Compass for NXT (CMPS-Nx)
Features
Magnetic Compass for NXT

CMPS-Nx is a digital magnetic compass specifically designed for NXT.
This compass can be used as a digital sensor on NXT to detect deviation from magnetic north pole (heading). You can use this on your robot to track a certain heading or follow paths with reference to magnetic north. This compass uses orthogonal two-axis magnetic sensor from Honeywell (HMC1052).

  • CMPS-Nx V2.0 works with NXT-G, NBC/NXC, LeJOS and RobotC
  • Multiple reading modes (Byte/Int/Float)
  • Dual sampling frequency (European/North American)
  • Resolution of 0.1 degrees with NBC and RobotC
  • Resolution of 1.44 degrees with NXT-G
  • Intuitive command interface
  • Maximum power consumption: 11.5mA at 4.7V
Does not include the Technic connectors shown in picture. (These connectors are part of Mindstorms NXT kit.)

Watch Example Video
This video was taken with NXT robot on a platform. NXT was programmed to orient itself to constant magnetic heading. When the platform is shifted, NXT notices the change in the heading, and aligns itself to the programmed heading.

How to calibrate Magnetic Compass for NXT

CMPS-Nx is capable of calibrating in-situ and can supply high resolution heading information. To calibrate CMPS-Nx, issue Calibration command and turn around at least twice while taking 20 second or more per turn. Issuing calibration Done command ends the calibration mode and resumes normal operation.
All the calibration constants are stored in internal non-volatile memory and they are retained even while the power is off.
